Year In Review

Following is a brief review of 2019’s activities as reported in The Milan Standard during the first six months of 2019 (January-June). Many will recall deaths or births during the past year, but we will not mention them, or other activities we will all re-member because of the personal nature connected with them.
January-Cady Pauley, and Brooke Littrell broke the game scoring record at the Milan Invitational Tour-nament by scoring 57 points apiece in the game. Wild-cats take first place in the Marceline tournament. The Milan  Wildcats win Milan Invitational basketball tournament. Bill and Teresa McCaughey celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Milan man, Larry Dean Custer,  killed in house fire.
February– Michael and Janie Gray celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. John Brummitt celebrates 90th birthday. Milan Wildcats are Grand River Conference Champions. another ice storm hits the area. Wil Pacheco and Sarabia Niasse are MHISCO King and Queen for Milan. Devin Fields and Mary Watt are Home coming King and Queen for Green City. Kade Ward and Leticia Bright are Browning Homecoming King and Queen. Wildcats clip North Andrew  for GRC Champ-ionship. First Missouri Bank donates $2000. to the Sullivan County Multi-Purpose Center. First Missouri Bank donates $3000. to the Sullivan County Expo Center and Fairgrounds. Oren and Linda Glidewell celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary. Green City girls are 2019 Class 1 District 11 Champs. Linn County boys 2019 Class 1 District 11 Champs. Milan Wildcats are 2019 Class 2 District 6 Champs. Elks present a check for $1526. to the Sullivan County Multi-Purpose Cen-ter. Wildcat Basketball season ends.
March – Brownie Girl Scout Troop 9286 celebrate the Girl Scouts’ 107th birthday. City Administrator, Terry Weter resigns from his position. Rosemary Swearengen retires from Sullivan County Sheriff’s   Office and Margaret Lees retires as Director from Sullivan County E-911.
April  – Property tax increase was approved to fund improvements at the Milan C-2 School. Green City coach, Cody Moore presented KRES All Star Awards to Brooke Littrell and Devin Fields. Coach Andrea Dabney of Milan C-2 presented KRES All Star Awards to Hunter Shaw and Ryan Dabney. Crowned King and Queen at Green City Prom was King, Nathan Schoonover, and Queen, Katie Jeffries. Eric Veach and David Dudley hired as relief officers for the City of Milan. Kelvin Vieyra named to the Honorable Mention for the Missouri Scholars 100 Program. Chase Stringfield shoots his first turkey in Sullivan County on the first day of turkey season 2019. West Locust Creek bridge west of Route 5 near Humphreys and the West Locust Creek bridge east of Route 5 near Milan closed for bridge replacements. Brooke Littrell places 1st in the Wildcat relays in Pole Vaulting. Madelyn Lynch threw the javelin to win the women’s javelin competition at the Milan relays. Clayton Moore of the Milan FFA Chapter is named Area 3 Star in Placement at the 91st Missouri FFA convention in Columbia, Missouri. Courtney McCollum and Erin Richardson accept a Building Our American Communities Grant on behalf of the Milan FFA Chapter during the 91st Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia, Missouri. Crowned King and Queen of the Milan C-2 School Prom is Queen Evelyn Castro and King Quinn Doak. Shawn Yuille pleads guilty in the death of Danette Rardon.
May – Girl Scout Troop help place flags at the headstones of veterans in three sections of the Oakwood Cemetery. Robert Urich, a junior at Grundy R-V School scored a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. Bill O’Connor celebrates 80th birthday. John and Deena Moffitt gave a donation of $2500 from Monsanto to the Sullivan County Exp Center. Sally Jones of Milan was honored by the Northeast Missouri Hospice for providing the most volunteer care hours. Cadence Pauley, Ryan Dabney, and Hunter Shaw qualify for the Class 2 State Championship Track Meet sectional held at Lathrop. Janet Sayre and Mike Smith give donation to Sullivan County Nutr-ition Site in memory of their mother, Carol Smith. Peggy Howard celebrates 60th birthday. Donnie Scott, a Vietnam War veteran, was presented with a “Quilt of Valor” award by the General John Sullivan Chapter DAR. Martha Gragg gave the presentation. Class of 1959 holds 60th class reunion. MFA Oil Foundation presents $2000. grant to the Winigan community Center for building improvements.Walt Schley of Harris, MO. is elected the Missouri Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart for 2019-2020. Kim Johnson retires as New-town-Harris R-111  School District Superintendent. Clint Bogard and Cully Cowgill held an open house for the Bogard-Cowgill Airport in Milan. Home Depot gave a $4400 grant to the Milan American Legion Post 228 for improvements. Home Depot recognized with a dinner in their honor. Green City Class of 1964 celebrate 55th Class Reunion. Grant Garrison on Dean’s List for 2019 Spring Semester for State Tech-nical College of Missouri. Milan Class of 1955 celebrate 63rd class reunion. Milan Class of 1969 celebrate 50th class reunion. Class of 1954 met at the Steak Pit for 65th class reunion. 301 register for Old Timers’ weekend.
JUNE – Derlan and Judith Tharp celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary. Joyce paints a mural on the side of a Green City building. NEMR presents a $1000 check to support the Milan recreation Baseball and Softball programs. Nancy Watt retires after 27 years working for the City of Milan. Nicholas and Jessica Smith of Green City, MO. announce the birth of a son. Annie Lawson Cowgill was inducted into the International Saddlebred Hall of Fame. William Cowgill took 1st place in the 2019 Sullivan County Shoot Archery 300 Sr. Division Fingers held at David Tharp’s residence. Jordan Cowgill placed 5th in the .22 rifle Open Sights Intermediate Division. They are the sons of David Cowgill Green City and Stephanie Chapman of Milan.N1712P68022C.pdf
