EDUCATION MATTERS #63
By Dr. Ben Yocom – Milan C-2 School District Superintendent
“STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE IN EVERYTHING”
Happy NEW YEAR! It’s hard to fathom the notion that we have now entered the year “2020”! It does not seem that twenty (20) years have passed since the infamous “Y2K”. Nearly everyone can likely remember where they were on that particular date and few individuals could imagine the technological progress our society has experience! Cell phones in the year 2000 were beginning to rise in popularity and email was an uncommon method of communication – now Cell phones and emails some of the most common ‘things’ we all use on a daily basis. Now, take a moment to imagine where ‘we’ will be in another twenty (20) years.
With the newness of the third decade within this millennium, the MC2 Family is preparing for the beginning of the 2nd semester. School will resume on Tuesday, 1/7/20. This will mark the 87th day of the academic year. Due to the new calendar requirements, the one (1) missed day we experienced (on Monday 12/16/19), we will not be required to make up that canceled day. The new statute requires schools to schedule 1080 instructional hours; but must attend a minimum of 1044 instructional hours. This leaves roughly six (6) days built into the calendar. Stay tuned to the Milan C-2 School District website, Social media pages (Facebook and Twitter), plus other media outlets for school scheduling changes or updates.
During the December, 2019 Board of Education meeting – Graduation for the class of 2020 was set for Sunday, May 10th at 2 p.m. in the Milan High School Gymnasium. This date/time was selected due to the various conflicts with other activities (Baseball districts and the sectional Track meet). Also, due to the Better MC2 Project 2020 work, the parking and entry/exit points will be different. Again, stay tuned for future information related to the Graduation ceremony.

Also, stay tuned to the various platforms for the update on the Better MC2 Project 2020 process. If you have driven by campus in the last few weeks, you have likely noticed a lot of progress on the project. It is ‘starting’ to take some shape and I have had multiple individuals share their excitement about the completion! It will be an outstanding addition to the community!
Parents-Guardians, as school resumes on the 7th, please make sure your students are doing all they can to be the best students they can be! This includes, but is not limited to – adequate sleep, frequent hand-washing, wearing coats/hats if the temperature calls for it and last, but certainly not least – check in with your child every day. Do not settle for the typical responses of “Good” or “Fine”, inquire about specific topics and activities. This will help the students to recall and/or retain the information. No matter what, if you have any questions about anything – please contact the appropriate office or staff member. I truly believe that the school and parents-guardians must work together to assist ALL students. After all, we all have the same goal – to ensure each student reaches their maximum potential!
The 60th Annual Milan Invitational Basketball Tournament begins on Monday, January 13th, 2020 – and will conclude on Saturday, January 18th, 2020. This year, there are sixteen (16) teams – eight (8) boys’ teams and eight (8) girls’ teams. Each team is scheduled to have three (3) games and the following schools will be entering both a girls and a boys’ team – Green City, Bucklin-Macon County, Linn County, Brashear, Novinger, Marceline, Putnam County and us (Milan). The games start at 4:30 p.m. each night. If you can, come out to the tournament!
