The last game of the week for the Milan varsity basketball Ladycats and perhaps the last contest on the old gymnasium hard wood was against Princeton Lady Tigers. The Milan Ladycat squad battled an ole Nemesis in a GRC tussle on Thursday, February 4, 2021. Princeton was in the game to the end, kept hanging around, but could not overtake the surging Milan Ladycats. The Ladycats maintained their perfect Conference record stopping Princeton 54-40.
Milan won the tip and Cady dropped in a long trey to set the tone for the Ladycats and the first lead, 3-0. Princeton answered with a deuce and stayed close the first quarter. The Lady Tigers led once in the quarter, 6-5, but trailed after the first stanza 16-15. Cady rung up 12, Jordyn 2, and Auburn 2.
The second quarter opened with Princeton working for a 2-pointer and their second lead of the contest, 17-16. However, that would be the last advantage for the Lady Tigers. Princeton fought hard, hung around, but could not jump back in front the rest of the evening. Cady and Jordyn controlled the rebounding as Cady put back several offensive boards for points.
Cady is very strong and sweet to see her show other scoring skills that may go unnoticed but sets her apart from others. The Ladycats led 29-22 at halftime. Cady had 8 and 20 for the first half. Jordyn had an all-around quarter also, 3 steals, 4 rebounds, an assist, and 4 points.
Cady scored 5 straight points for Milan to open the third quarter and a 12-point Ladycat lead, 34-22. However, the Tigers clawed back with their own 5-0 run and stayed within 7 points, 34-27. Both teams traded buckets, but Milan added to their lead, going into the final stanza up by 9 points, 41-32.
The Lady Tigers did not throw in the towel but could get no closer than 8 points. Fanny drew a charge foul with about two minutes remaining that appeared to take air out of any final Lady Tiger rally. The little things that do not show up in the box score and contribute to team victory. What a way to send off the old gymnasium.
Cady had a great all-around game, sending off the old gym with a double-double, 37 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals; Jordyn 8 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals; Auburn 4 points, 5 rebounds; Janissa 3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal; Fanny 1 point, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal; Bobbi Ann Richardson with 1 point, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block. Hallie had 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
