CHARLENE KAREN PITTMAN
Charlene Karen Pittman, 78, Green Castle, Missouri, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Northeast Regional Medical Center, with family by her side.
Charlene was born on March 1, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Henry and Bernice (Pollard) Dietrich.
On June 9, 1962 she was united in marriage to Larry Paul Pittman in a ceremony at the Kingsland Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Missouri, and they moved to the farm and house where Larry lived when growing up. Charlene loved living in the country where they had cats, dogs, horses and cattle.
Charlene went to Southwest High School in St. Louis and then attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville. She studied Home Economics and Library Science. She later attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, where she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science. She also became a lifelong MIZZOU fan. She and Larry held season tickets to MIZZOU football since 1969.They watched MIZZOU basketball on TV. Larry and Charlene enjoyed motorcycle trips to Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Park as well as trips around Missouri.
Charlene started working for the Milan school system in 1968. Many former students have fond memories of “Mrs. Pittman” reading to them in the Library. Charlene retired in July of 2001. She spent 33 years working with Milan students and faculty. Immediately after her retirement from the school, she got a job with the Milan Standard doing layout for the paper. She worked at the Milan Standard for 20 years. When she wasn’t working Charlene spent time collecting owls. She had owl wallpaper, jewelry and Christmas ornaments.Charlene is survived by one nephew, Lane (Teresa) Williams, and one niece Lynn (Randy) Cummings; one great niece, Kassi (Brian) Hoxmeier; three great nephews, Ross(Kerri) Williams, Cole Cummings and Carson Cummings; a brother-in-law, Floyd Williams; two great great grand nephews, Paxton Hoxmeier and Coy Williams, and a great great grand niece, Sterling Williams, all from Iowa. Cousins from Missouri include Mike(Mary) Pollard, Glen Pollard, John(Karen) Pollard and Cathy Hardman.
She was preceded in death by her husband Larry, her parents Henry and Bernice Dietrich, a sister-in-law Carolyn Williams, and her in-laws Paul and Hazel Pittman, and two cousins, Connie Boschen and Dennis Pollard.
Charlene’s body has been donated to KCOM per her wishes.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Charlene and Larry together in the future.
