The Milan Ladycat softball teams were host to the Brookfield Lady Bulldogs on Monday, September 13, 2021.
In a sloppy, with plenty of runs scored, 17 total, entertaining, battle between 2 scrappy squads, Milan pulled out a 9-8 victory. This non-conference contest saw Brookfield capitalize and take a large lead, 5-0, only to see Milan answer with 4 runs, then finally grab the lead in the fifth and hang on for the win.
Cady Pauley was on the rubber for the Ladycats, tossed 7 innings, throwing 151 pitches 98 for strikes. She gave up 8 runs, 2 of which were earned, on 7 hits, 4 walks, while striking out 14 batters. The Ladycats committed 7 errors.
Paris Amer tossed for Brookfield, going 6 innings, using 106 pitches, 63 for strikes, allowed 9 runs, 2 earned on 6 hits, 7 walks, while striking out 4 batters, 1 hit batter. Brookfield committed 4 errors.
The first batter of the game reached on a Ladycat error, but Cady struck out the next 3 batters. In the bottom of the first with 1 out, Cady was intentionally passed. The Lady Bulldogs took the bat completely out of Cady’s hands. She never had a swing all game as the Brookfield team intentionally walked her all 4 times. A strikeout, a walk to Gracie Dickson, but a ground out ended the inning.
The wheels fell off for the Ladycats in the top of the second, as Brookfield racked up 5 runs on 2 hits, 2 stolen bases, 1 sacrifice, and 4 Milan errors.
Milan bounced back with 4 runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 1 run, 5-4. With 1 out, Emerson walked after a strikeout. Emerson moved up when Kyla reached via Lady Bulldog error. Both advanced a base on an infield hit by Amy. Cady was intentionally passed to force in a runner, Emerson. What you hope can happen, did as Janissa Martinez cleared the bases with a 2 out ringing double to dead center. The next batter was retired, but what an optimistic turn of events.
Both teams had scoring opportunities the next 2 innings, each group leaving 2 runners on base each inning. Milan 4, Brookfield 5 after 4 complete innings.
The Brookfield fifth saw the Lady Bulldogs load the bases after 2 were out, 2 hits, and a Ladycat error. Cady struck out the next hitter, her third of the inning.
Another hold gave the Ladycats another spark in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Emerson Pauley singled up the middle, went to second when Jocelyn Perez was plucked by-a-pitch. Kyla reached on a Brookfield error, scoring Emerson. Both runners crossed home on a triple to left center by Amy Pickering. Cady collected her fourth walk, but a ground out ended the rally. Three runs gave the Ladycats their first lead of the contest, 7-5 after 5 innings.
Brookfield chipped away scoring 1 run in the top of the 6th to close the gap, 7-6. Three hits produced the tally. Cady had 3 ks this inning.
Milan added 2 more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. Gracie Dickson reached on an error, scampered to second on a passed ball, and came around to score on another critical error by Brookfield. Auburn was the recipient of the second error and settled at second base. Auburn advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. Emerson lofted a fly deep enough to left field for Auburn to tag up and score. Milan 9, Brookfield 6 after 6 innings.
Brookfield came storming back in the top of the seventh. Two walks to open the inning. A strike out and fielder’s choice had runners in scoring position with 2 outs. A fitting end to a sloppy nail bitter as Cady recorded strikeout 14. Sweet win over a tough non-conference foe, 9-8.
Offensively Amy Pickering was 3 of 4 from the plate, 2 infield perfect bunts, and a timely triple, scored 1 run, and drove in 2. Emerson Pauley was 2 for 2, walked once, 1 sacrifice fly, scored 2 runs, and drove in 1. Janissa had the other hit, the most needed contact, a 2 out bases loaded double to clear the bags, and 3 rbis. Cady walked 4 times, 1 rbi, scored 1 run, and stole 1 base. Kyla scored 2 runs. Anna Marie Smith scored 1 run as a pinch runner. Jocelyn Perez walked once, hit-by-a-pitch once. Gracie walked once and scored 1 run. Auburn Cole scored 1 run.
