(MILAN, Mo.) — The Sullivan County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will hold its required annual meeting on Tuesday, October 11, beginning at noon at the Milan Community Center.
Federal law requires every county in Missouri to have an active (LEPC). By law, the LEPC must include, representatives from each of the following groups: elected State and local officials, law enforcement, civil defense, firefighting, first aid, health, local environmental, hospital and transportation personnel, broadcast and print media, community groups, and owners and operators of facilities who have hazardous materials as defined by current statutes.
The LEPC is tasked with developing hazardous material emergency plans for any hazardous material incident. This could be a natural disaster such as a tornado or a leak of a hazardous substance from a train derailment.
Representatives from each school district, such as a principle or superintendent, are encouraged to attend. Hazardous material emergency plans usually involve the use of school gymnasiums and cafeterias as shelter areas.
Members of the general public may attend this annual meeting. If an individual desires to address the LEPC, advance notice should be provided to the coordinator prior to the meeting. The coodinator, Dennis Goldsmith, may be contacted at monranch@grm.net or 660- 265-5619.
