The Milan Ladycats took on the Linn County Lady Mustangs for third place in the Milan Tourney on Saturday, January 14, 2023. Milan was the tournaments two seed while Linn County was the number 5 seed.
This was very close battle to the end. Milan led by 4 points with 2 minutes left in the contest. The Ladycats hit critical free throws, down the stretch and closed the door with 53-44 victory for third place.
Milan won the tip, Emerson assisted a a three pointer by Marian Dabney and Milan led 3-0. The teams exchanged free throws. Marian assisted on a long 3 pointer by Amy Pickering, Milan led 7 to 3. Linn County ran off 6 straight for their first lead 9 to 7. With an assist from Hallie, Amy hit her second trey of the quarter pulling the Ladycats back on top 10 to 9. The Lady Mustangs answered with the final 4 points of the quarter to lead 13 to 10. Hallie Weaver grabbed 4 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals.
The second quarter continued on even terms but Milan could not regain the lead. Linn County led, 22-21 at intermission. Avery Pickering was fouled in the act of shooting and canned charity tosses, opening the frame, cutting the deficients. Linn County converted 2 of 3 free throws to increase their margin 15 to 12. Amy sank a floater and Milan trailed by one point 14 to 15. Linn County kicked in their offense, scoring 6 straight for their largest lead 20 to 14. Milan went back to the well. Emerson assisted on Marian Dabney’s three pointer. Danika Shepherd connectd on 2 for 4 free throws and with 1:12 left before halftime Milan trailed 20 to 19. Linn County’s Alyssa Bukovac stopped the rally with a deuce, 22-19. Emily Menchaca passed Marian for 2 points to trail 22-21 at half.
After adjustment from halftime, Milan ripped off 7 straight points using a full court press forcing turnovers. Milan was able to cash in the miscues and regain the lead 28-21. The Ladycats would not relinguish the lead, this quarter, taking a 36-34 into the final stanza. Marian began the quarter being fouled attemping a shot, splashing both free throws. Emerson followed with a trey, Auburn Cole knocked down 2 free throws. The Lady Mustang’s Morgan Livingston and Martia Brosdahl each hit a 2 points field goal apiece 28-26 Milan. Marian passed to Emily Menchaca who dialed in a 3 pointer and Emerson drilled her second three of the quarter giving Milan their largest margin of the contest 34-28. Morgan Livingston dropped in 2 free throws for Linn County.
Danika answered with a power move inside, Milan up by 8. Linn County realed off the next 6 points to draw within 2 points. Emery Dodd hit a 2 then 1 of 2 free throws. Martia Brosdahl converted a 2 plus 1 situation 36-34 Milan after 3 quarters.
Amy began the fourth quarter with 2 points, Morgan Livingston kept Linn County close with deuce 38-36, however two 1 plus 1 situations failures cost the Lady Mustangs. Auburn grabbed an offensive rebound put it back in to give Milan a little cushion 40-36. Alyssa Bukovac converted two free throws but 2 more missed charity tosses left Linn down by 2, 40-38. Auburn made a deuce, Livingston countered, then Auburn converted 2 free throws, Marian a deuce and Milan was up by 6, 46-40 with 3:37 left in the game. The teams traded buckets 48-44 with 2 minutes left. Hallie made 3 of 4, Emily 2 of 2 free throws 53-44.
Marian led Milan with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block.
Amy reached double figures 10, 2 rebounds.
Auburn, so close to a double-double, 9 points, 2 assists, 2 steals.
Emerson had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals.
Emily had 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists.
Danika had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal.
Avery had 2 points, 1 rebound.
Hallie had 1 point but double digit rebounds 11, 3 assists, 4 steals and all out hustle all the time.
