SEPTEMBER Continued from last week – The Milan City Park received new picnic tables thanks to the collaboration between the Milan Area Chamber of Commerce and the Milan City Park Board. Adair County Route 6 is finally open after completion of the bridge east of Novinger. The Winigan Sesquicentennial Grand Marshals are Freda Presswood and Alta Kasten. The Wildcats upset the Trenton Bulldogs, 4-0. The Milan Class of 2003 celebrated their 20th year Class Reunion at the Sullivan County Country Club in Milan. The parents of Madison Francis Webb, II and Ashley Lynn Russell Alcanter announce their wedding to take place on October 13, 2023, at the former Methodist Church in Missouri City, Missouri. The Green City R-1 Class of 1971 held its 52nd Class Reunion at the David and Martha Perkins cabin.
OCTOBER – Milan C-2 School to receive Safety Grant Funding. Crowned King and Queen of the Milan C-2 Homecoming Royalty was Queen Avery Pickering and King Ahmet Niasse. Jim and Sherry Brinkley are ranked Eighth in Angus registrations for Missouri during 2023.Winigan is recognized as a Smart Rural Community by Rural Broadband Association and NEMR. NEMR employees participated in the Foundation for Rural Services Annual 5K walk/run. The national event raises money to send students on an all-expense paid trip to Washington D. C. and helps fund the FRS Scholarship program. The NRA Foundation has awarded Green City R-1 FFA Trap team a grant totaling $10928.00 to fund 2Atlas AT-400 Wobble Base trap throwers, 2 Atlas AT-400 Wheel Carts and 2 Atlas 110 bolt power converters 100 amp. Green
Castle is named a Smart Rural Community by The Rural Broadband Association and NEMR. The Browning First Baptist Church held a celebration/reception to celebrate 30 years of service to the church by Pastor and wife Lou Ann Abbott of Browning. Walter Schley, a former resident of Harris, Missouri, was honored as a Purple Heart recipient. Green City FFA alumni poured concrete for a new trap shoot to be constructed at Green City. The Milan Chamber of Commerce and Sayre & Associates celebrated their 45th anniversary in Milan on October 19, 2023. Green City Class of 1956 held their 67th Class Reunion at the One Way Café in Green City on October 7, 2023. Tennille Banner and Grace Marsh, Resource Officer, met at the Missouri Association of Rural Education Fall Conference to discuss critical issues in today’s school safety.
NOVEMBER – Kary and Mary Hoerrmann celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on November 25, 2023. Nick and Ashley Taylor recently directed a $5000.00 donation to the Sullivan County Multi Purpose Senior Center to use to help to provide health and wellness by providing nutritious meals to residents of Sullivan County. Gary and Brenda Williams celebrate 64 years of marriage. The Milan FFA is a National FFA Champion team. The team competed during the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. State route 5 in Sullivan County is finally opened after major improvements involving the lake project. Adan Callejo, a member of the Milan FFA chapter in Milan, was selected to play Clarinet in the National FFA Band. October Employee of the Month at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital is Connor Giebe. The Green City Lion’s Club posted winners of the International Peace Poster Contest. They are: Paisley McClamroch, Audrey McNish, and Madison Buckingham. Milan Wildcats are headed for the playoffs. Thanks to a Vietnam War Hero, Leslie Downing, from whom a large donation came to the Green City Park Board, many new changes are coming in the future. The Wildcats won against the Hamilton-Penney in the District Championship Quarterfinal and advanced as a top four team on the state leader board. They will play against North Platte at Dearborne, Mo. on November 25 at 1:00 p.m. November Employee of the Month at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital is Marilou Plamonte. The Wildcats ended their season one game short of the state championship game. Milan Wildcats finished the year with a 11-2 record. Sullivan County Memorial Hospital is to celebrate 70 years of serving the community. The City of Milan and Milan Park Board received a $500.00 donation from Kirksville Toyota to go towards improvements to Forest Grove Park. The Milan Elks make a Food Bank Donation of $2000.00 to the Food Bank of Northeast and Central Missouri.
DECEMBER – Coach John Dabney named to Missouri Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Milan basketball girls win Tri-Rivers Classic Varsity Basketball Tournament. Green City boys wins first in Novinger tournament. Milan Christmas kickoff to be held December 9. Green City Community Christmas dinner to be held December 10. Milan city council proclaims December 4 as Milan C-2 FFA Chapter Day. Christmas kickoff decorating business winners were: first place, Putnam County State Bank with their winter wonderland scene, second place was Verimore Bank with their decorations of Christmas and Nutcrackers, third place went to American Osteopathic College of Radiology with their winter scene. Taking first place in the residential category was Blake and Brittani Maulsby with their blow-ups welcoming Santa, second place was Rob and Carla Guffey with their magical Christmas scene of an arch with snowmen showing Santa the way to the house and third place went to Kelli Jacobs and Gingo Smith with their reindeer assortment getting ready for Christmas. The parade winners were first place the Eddy Family with their Candy Land Express, second place was the Maulsby and Mosley Families with their large variety of Christmas blowups and third place was Santa and Mrs. Claus and elves in their horse drawn sleigh. Green Castle celebrates Christmas with community dinner, arrival of Santa and a movie. Sullivan County Health Department taking bids for renovations and addition construction. Mr. Stephen Till, Milan band director and band members, Adan Callejo, Juliette Birruete, Michael Johnson and Johnathon Stanton performed on the south side of the courthouse with a short Christmas concert. Milan school board sets date for graduation and approves fencing and archways . DeEtta Jones was honored for her decoration of the gazebo in Browning.
