Following is a brief review of 2020’s activities as reported in The Milan Standard during the last six months of 2020 (July-December). Many will recall deaths or births during the past year, but we will not mention them, or other activities we will all remember because of the personal nature connected with them.
July – Joyce Ayers is parade Grand Marshall at Green City’s 4th of July celebration. Ron and Ann Miller celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary with a card shower. Allysen Jones was selected as Queen of the Sullivan County Fair. Junior Miss title went to Emma Whitlock. The first runner-up in the Queen contest was Mazie Jacobs. The first runner up in the Junior Miss division was Janissa Martinez. The crowd favorite in the Queen division was Lillian Fordyce. In the Junior Miss division, Janissa Martinez was awarded the title of Crowd Favorite. Emma Whitlock and Courtney McCollum were awarded the title of Miss Photogenic. Mary Billington graduates from Moberly School District. Staff at SCMH to receive Pandemic pay raise retroactively. Due to the corona virus, less shopping is done and there is a shortage of coins. Work on Sullivan County Route N to begin to replace a culvert. Haleys celebrate 70th Wedding Anniversary with a card shower. A house occupied by Donnie McDonald and Tracy McConkey was destroyed by fire. No injuries were reported, but the house was a total loss. Milan Rural Fire Depart-ment was assisted by the Green City Fire Depart-ment. Courtney Lunsford receives Honor. She has been selected to become a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. Mrs. Betty Hatcher has created a scholarship to help students involved in Nursing and Health Sciences programs at North Central Missouri College. The Edward & Betty Hatcher Scholarship will assist a Milan C-11 or Grundy R-V graduate pursuing an allied health degree/certificate at North Central Missouri College. The first scholarship will be fall of 2021. The American Legion Post #228 purchased a Cub Cadet Ultima ZTX4 Zero Turn mower. Winners of the Jr. Miss Firecracker at Green City on July 4th was Alexa Lee, Queen Firecracker was Allysen Jones, Mini Miss Firecracker was Taleena Weaver, and Little Miss Firecracker was Alexis Smith. Grand Marshall was Joyce Ayers. Rick and Rose Thurlo celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
August – Five juveniles were arrested for the destruction of 6 windows in the early morning hours of Friday, August 7, 2020. Smithfield donates $50,000 to help fund the scoreboard project at the Milan C-2 School. Smithfield also donates foot controlled Sanitizer Stations and Plexiglas Separators to Milan C-2 Schools. Football and Softball Jamborees were held on August 21, 2020. Two people were injured in a 3 vehicle accident at the edge of Green City on August 27, 2020. Michael Gray was seriously injured and was life flighted to University Hospital in Columbia. David Chapman was taken to Sullivan County Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Kenneth Dunlap was in the third vehicle, but was not injured.
September – Larry and Linda Oder celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on September 14. MFA Agri Services donated $2500 to help fund the new scoreboard project. Audie and Cora Hollon celebrated their 45th Wedding Anni-versary on September 1st. First Baptist Church in Milan to start holding regular services again on September 13. Green City R-1 School softball and baseball seniors celebrated Senior Night on September 4. The Lady Wildcats from 2004 will be inducted into Milan C-2 School District Hall of Fame during halftime at the Homecoming game on Friday, October 2, 2020. Jeryk Eddy opened the GHE Automotive Shop on April 1st at 430 East 3rd Street in Milan. Labor Day Grand Marshal at the parade in Green Castle was Kathy Clawson of Green Castle, MO. Great Western Bank awards John Buell Great Gifts of Gratitude Award on September 17. Dorva Lair Jones turned 100 on September 23, 2020. Milan Softball girls take 2nd place in Milan Tourney. Wildcats defeat Princeton Tigers. Tracey Mason, Sullivan County Associate Circuit Judge was presented with the 2020 President’s Award of the Missouri Association of Probate and Associate Circuit Judges by President, Judge Dennis Eckold. She was recognized for her dedication to the administration of justice and her working relationships with the trial judges of this state.
October – Queen candidates for Homecoming 2020 were: Freshman – Rosalyn Roman; Sopho-more – Auburn Cole; Junior- Brianna Hail; Senior- Yaneth Garcia; Candidate at large was Senior – Cady Pauley. Green City Depot moved to the north in preparation for new foundation and other much needed repairs. Cady Pauley, senior, was crowned Home-coming Queen at the pep rally on Thursday night, October 1, 2020. Inductees were inducted into the Milan C-2 Hall of Fame on Homecoming night. They were: Whitley Schnelle, Samantha (Shaw) McCabe, Jessica (Taylor) Vierhout, Sheena (McCabe) Smith, Jessica (Huffman) Parsons, Brook (Bankus) Dodson, Mary (van Ingen) Lentz, Danielle (Taylor) Lutz, Catlin (Essmyer) Ewart, Tricia (McCabe) Gile, Anglea Foster and Steve Wells. Quinn Doak, Court-ney McCollum, and Clay-ton Moore, members of the Milan FFA Chapter were awarded American FFA Degree at the 93rd National FFA Convention & Expo.
November – Rod Belzer hosts a Mushroom Worker in Winigan in the Com-munity Center. Dorothy Herington celebrates her 98th birthday. Walt Schley from Harris, Missouri received the Sons of the American Revolution(SAR) Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award) for his invaluable service to the SAR and to the Veteran Community. Jackie Coin retires after 25 years as a beautician in Green City. Advanced Medical Express Clinic based out of Brookfield expands their business to include Green City in their service area. Brett Sayre of Milan won the Missouri FFA Agricultural Education Proficiency Award. Clayton Moore won the Missouri FFA Agricultural Mechan-ics Design and Fabrication Proficiency Award. Fanny Marquina is the recipient of a dual credit scholarships. She was given a one time $300 scholarship to use toward her tuition. WIC services for federal fiscal year 2020- 2021 has been signed with the Missouri Depart-ment of Health and Senior Services. COVIS-19 cases are still on the rise. We had our first measurable snowfall on November 23, 2020.The North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission has been awarded $25 million from the Natural Resources Conservation Service to fund design and construction of the East Locust Creek Reservoir. Senior, Gracey Gordon, 2nd team and Junior, Celeste Athon, 1st team were Green City R-1 All District softball selections. Green City Tri County All Conference Selections were: Junior, Layton Fields, Co-MVP; Sophomore, Aaron Peavler, 1st team; Senior, Riley Schoonover, 2nd team; Sophomore, Grant O’Hav-er, 2nd team; Senior, Gra-cey Gordon, 1st team; Junior, Celeste Athon, 2nd team. Eleven Milan C-2 players receive Grand Rivers Conference honors. They were: Senior, Mallan Cole; Senior, Dominic Dabney; Senior, Marcus Glidewell; Senior, Dominic Shirley; Sophomore, Darren Doporto; Junior, Deric Do-porto; Senior, Riley Shoe-maker; Senior, Jordan Ponce; Sophomore, Chris-tian Chaparro; Sophomore, Jeremy Bennett; and Senior Axel Pagan.
December – Christmas kick-off to be held Decem-ber 5, 2020 with a parade, Milan Emerald Regiment Band, a visit from Santa, drawings, and more. Joni Oaks was selected as NCMC’s new Registrar. Ladycats take 1st place at the Tri Rivers tourney. The Wildcats take 3rd place at the Tri Rivers tourney. COVID continues to spread in Sullivan County. Milan Elks’ Lodge to serve delivery and carry-out meals on Christmas Day.
