APRIL – Jose and Sharon Vazquez of Milan lost their home to a fire on April 3, 2021. The fire started in the barn killing several animals and continued on to the house destroying it. The winners of the Thank A Farmer week sponsored by Sullivan County Farm Bureau were the Newtown Grocery, Green City Food Market, and Richardson’s Grocery Store. Scott Frazier received Elk of the Year award. Patty Foster was nominated as Officer of the Year. Milan and surrounding areas received varied amounts of snow on Tuesday morning April 20th, 2021. Milan received 2 inches. The Milan Community Betterment Poker Run winners were Steve Eddy with the worst poker hand and Jennifer Swearengen had the best poker hand. Tharp’s Body Shop closes after 44 years in business. The Milan Elks’ Lodge presented a check for $3,226 to the Sullivan County Nutrition Center. Green City Prom was held on Friday, April 23rd, 2021 at the White Oaks Barn in Kirksville, Mo. The Grand March was held at 6:00 p.m.
MAY – Harve and Rosie Rhodes celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 8th, 2021 at the Browning Community Center in Browning, Mo. They were married on November 21, 1970, but due to the COVID the celebration had been postponed until now. Green City Chamber celebrated the opening of LuxeLash Co. It is owned and operated by Robin Hall and is located on the South side of the square. Crowned the Prom King and Queen of the Green City Prom were: The King was Senior Judd Hepler and the Queen was Senior Halley Schoonover. Brad Smith, Ryan Smith, and Ronnie are Area Three Star Farmers from the Milan FFA Chapter. Members from the Milan FFA Chapter placed third in the FFA knowledge career development event at the 93rd Missouri FFA Convention. They were Adan Callejo, Jackson Smith, Danika Shepard, and Kyla White. The Milan golf team consisting of Taylor Trenter, Darren Doporto, Jerrett Courtney, Michael Pipes, and Garrett Mosley won second in the Conference at Cameron held on Monday, May 3, 2021. Newtown Community 4-H Club members completed a beautification service at the junction of Highways 139 and Route E. Members helping were Tristen Faulkner, Johannes Oaks, Liam Oaks, Ryland Oaks, Kaden Oaks, Landry Oaks, and Grant Oaks. Seth Oaks is the Club leader. Amber Liebhart is selected 2021 Middle School Educator of the year for the Northeast Region. Peace Art contest winners announced by Green City Lady Lions are Shyanne Holand, Jake Crist, and Clancy Ballinger. Crowned King and Queen at the Milan prom on Saturday, May 8th, 2021were King, Kevin Osorio; and Queen, Jordyn Gray. NEMR Telecom is bringing fiber optic high-speed internet to Milan soon. Connie Barker, FNP is coming to Green City Rural Clinic on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. She is replacing Dr. Ken Richards who previously left the facility. Asher Buggs-Tipton is named Athlete of the Week. Edward “Eli” Withey of Milan was arrested on Friday, May 14, 2021 as a suspect in the murder case of his wife, Mattie (Dean) Withey, of Milan. Withey is being held without bond. Several events are planned for the Memorial Day Weekend on Market on Main by the Old Timers’ Reunion committee. A Ford E450 box truck was donated by Great Western Bank to the Milan C-2 School District to be incorporated into the Milan Transportation Department. Milan’s Smithfield plant is under scrutiny over COVID numbers. Gracey Gordon is State winner of Missouri FFA Nursery Operations Proficiency Award. Gracey is a member of the Green City FFA. Green City Gophers win 1st place and Green City Lady Gophers win 2nd place at District 3 Class 1 Track and Field held at Schuyler County on Saturday, May 8th, 2021. Jacquelyn Perez of Milan, Mo. was selected as NCMC’s Outstanding Student for May. Ryan Smith and Mallan Cole of Milan received the Missouri State FFA Degree, the highest degree members can receive at state level. They are members of the Milan FFA Chapter. The Milan FFA Chapter placed third in the livestock evaluation career development event at the 93rd Missouri FFA Convention. The team members included Emma Whitlock, Blake Eitel, Bobbi Ann Richardson, and Mallan Cole. Wright Memorial Hospital earns a Five-Star rating by the centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Girl Scout Brownie Troop 9286 made a donation to the food pantry and then put flags on the veteran headstones. This was to finish a badge called My Best Self. Matt Keuhn Helped the girls to earn this badge. Claire Billington graduates from Moberly High School. Milan Chamber of commerce hosted a BBQ contest on May 29th. Brice Mosley won first place in the rib division and Cary Maulsby won first place in the pork shoulder division. Jay Cragg won $500.00 in the Running of the Balls contest. Jeremy Bennett received 3rd place in the Missouri State Track and Field Competition held in Jefferson City on May 21 with a jump of 13.9 meters. He is a member of the Milan High School Track Team.
JUNE – Audrey Baker celebrates her 100th birthday on June 3rd 2021. The Milan C-2 Art Club painted a mural on the building at the City pool. The Milan Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the Rural Nutrition on the north side of the square in Milan. NEMR Telecom donated $1000.00 to support Milan Summer Recreation Baseball and Softball Programs to Christa Widner, coach. Governor Mike Parson signs Joint Resolution Funding for Sullivan County Reservoir at the Milan Community Center. Pastor Eugene Waldorp celebrated 40 years of pastoring at the Lighthouse Pentecostal Church of God. NEMR Telecom donated $1000.00 to the Green City Summer Recreation Program. Discussion was held at a Milan City Council meeting to change the name of the amphitheater. Consensus was they do not want to change the name. Bucklin Chapter 57 American Legion Riders conducted their annual Legacy Ride on June 12, 2021. The Green City class of 1981 celebrated their 40th Class Reunion on June 12, 2021.
OCTOBER – Homecoming Queen candidates for 2021 were: Emerson Pauley, Magnolia Playan, Hallie Weaver, Bobbi Ann Richardson, and Jocelyn Perez. Betty Gramling celebrates her 90th birthday. David Fields celebrates 25 years with the City of Green City. Sara Hollon Jennings, Angie May Noonon, Jennifer Schaper Hentages, and Kelli May Choate were inducted into the Milan High School Hall of Fame. George M. Gooch, a Pearl Harbor MIA Sailor from Laclede, MO. is buried at the Laclede Cemetery. Homecoming Queen was Jocelyn Perez who was escorted by Blake Eitel. Bonnie Maulsby celebrated her 90th birthday. Gracey Gordon is selected as NCMC’s Outstanding Student for October. Milan FFA Trap Shooting team tied for 3rd place at the State Trap Shooting held in Linn Creek, Mo. Joan Harrelson was recognized for 60 years of service with the Milan Rebekah Lodge #435. She was given flowers and an 60-year member pin on October 9, 2021. Donations are being accepted again this year for the Adopt-A-Child Program sponsored by the Milan Interfaith Food Pantry and the Milan Ministerial Alliance. It is for the residents of Sullivan County that are less fortunate, and it gives them a better Christmas. The late Libby Cowgill was honored with an amphitheater dedication on Oct. 2nd . Rick Neff and his horse Rosies Rollin won the Kansas National Barrel Horse Association Championship which was comprised of 300 entries. Severe storms caused a lot of damage in sections of southeastern Sullivan County. Purdin Propane was destroyed by a tornado along with other areas receiving high winds and heavy rain on October 24, 2021. Raya Young, Nurse Practioner is welcomed at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital. COVID-19 boosters from Moderna, and J & J are approved by the FDA. Janice and Dean Page and the Jim Scott families donated 27 acres of right of way land to replace Hwy N when it is inundated for the new lake coming into Milan. Abby Neff if Galt, Mo. captured the world championship title in Polebending at the 2021 AQHA
Select World Championship Show at the OKC Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. The Milan FFA Livestock team placed 8th at the Missouri State FFA contest held at the American Royal Livestock contest in Kansas City.
NOVEMBER – Tina Garber is recognized as EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital. Milan football squad falls to the Gallatin Bulldogs in the final playoffs. Joan Smith donates land to the North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission for right-a-way for a roadway. Cady Pauley signs letter of intent with Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. All conference Football Players are: Deric Doporto, Blake Eitel, Cristian Chaparro, Darren Doporto, Ahmet Niasse, John Ray De La Cruz. Honorable mention are: Chase Jacobs, Carlos Cotto, and David Eddy. Milan Elks sponsor their annual FREE Thanksgiving dinner. Green City holds its Christmas lighting of the park with various activities. Jim Brinkley is re-elected to serve on the American Angus Association Board of Directors at the Annual Convention in Ft. Worth, Texas. Celeste Athon signs letter of intent to play basketball at Stephens College of Columbia, Missouri. Green City is Seeded 1st at the Novinger tournament.
DECEMBER – The Milan Chamber of Commerce, Milan Old Timers, and the Sullivan County Community Development pulled funds together to bring back an old Milan Christmas tradition, Santa’s House on the courthouse lawn. Milan C-2 School District is exploring a four day week. The City of Milan received a grant to be used for police equipment from Kelly Beets MIRMA.
Green City girls and boys win the Novinger tournament. Winners of the Green City Lady Lions Club “Peace Poster contest) were Jaydin Tennant, daughter of Rachel Lasher and Joseph Billington; Kyera Vasey, daughter of Mike and Jodi Vasey; and Noah Williams son of Amber and Greg Williams. Christmas Kickoff held in Milan was a great success. Bill and Elaine Frazier celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The basketball King and Queen this year at Green City High School are Queen Madison Lunsford daughter of Doug and Amanda Lunsford and King Laydon Fields son of Donnie and Angela Fields. Winners of the Christmas Kickoff Light Parade winners are 1st Place The Eddy Family with the Polar Express – 2nd Place The Mower Shop with Snoopy and 3rd Place Incredible Christmas by Blake and Brittani Maulsby.
The Residential Decorating Contest Winners were 1st Place Erika Guitrrez – 2nd Place Jeryk and Megan Eddy. – 3rd Place Blake and Brittani Maulsby. Business Decorating Contest winners were 1st Place Sullivan County Title. – 2nd Place Rural Nutrition – 3rd Place Complete Family Chiropractic.
JULY – Janice Booth is Grand Marshal of 4th of July parade held in Green City.
Sullivan County Fair Queen contestants are Gracey Gordon, Savanna Linhart, Madison McCollum, Jocelyn Perez, and Kasey Sallee. Junior Miss contestants are Landry Oaks, Emma Middleton, and Andrea Pendergraft. Sullivan County Memorial Hospital has been awarded a $6812. matching safety grant from Missouri Employers Mutual-MEM. Cady Pauley received Basketball and Track Athlete of the Year. Jocelyn Perez was crowned Queen of the Sullivan County Fair held in July. Kenny Broyles is ordained as a church Deacon. Belinda Essmyer abd Jean Page attended a reception hosted by Missouri’s First Lady Teresa Parson. It was in honor of a bicentennial quilt block being donated from Sullivan County. COVID cases are on the rise again in Missouri. Crop-dusters were at the airport outside of Milan on July 9th, 2021. The airplanes landed at the airport to fill with fertilizer to dust crops in the area. Great Western Bank donated a $5,000. “Making Life Great Grant” to the Buddy Pack Program at three schools in Sullivan County. The extended family of John Henry and Ora Belle Frazier Lawrence held a “cousins get together” on Saturday, July 24, 2021. The Sullivan County Fair was held from July 5th thru July 11th. Ron Morlan retired after 42 years of service as a director on NEMR Telecom’s Board. Lyndell and June Tharp celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on February 26th, 2021 but due to COVID could not have a family celebration. On July 3rd a celebration was held at the Point, Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville, MO. Classes of 1980 and 1981 enjoyed their 40th class reunion on July 31st. The annual Young family reunion was held on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the Green City Community Room at City Hall. Decker Rardon and family donated 203 pounds of tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia on July 21, 2021.
AUGUST – The Coffman Family Reunion was held at Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville, MO. on August 7, 2021. The Ford Family Reunion was held at The American Legion Hall on Sunday, August 1, 2021. Dr. Jason Chrisman has taken the CEO position at the Sullivan County Memorial Hospital. Postage prices take an increase as well as subscription rates and single copy paper rates. Wayne and Bessie Custer celebrate 60th Wedding Anniversary with a card shower. Virginia Dehm celebrates he 99th birthday on August 30th. The Bible Grove, Mo. Historical Preservation Committee hosted a 100th celebration of the school on August 20-22 in Bible Grove, MO. The school is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Green City Post Office is deemed unsafe and is closed. Will be torn down. Pfizer vaccine is given FULL approval by the FDA. PAW PRINTING is completed down Market Street to the school by Milan C-2 students. The staff here at The Milan Standard are saddened by the death of our colleague, Charlene Pittman, on August 26, 2021. She will be truly missed.
SEPTEMBER – Larry and Diana Carmack celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary. The Oaks family is chosen as Missouri farm family for Sullivan County. Mary Craig of Green Castle was the Grand Marshal of the Green Castle 2021 Labor Day Parade. The Milan FFA Trap Shooting Team competed at West Quincy Gun Club on September 4th . The team placed 5th. Braydon Rardon was the 3rd high individual shooting. Jackson’s Place Restaurant opens on September 2nd 2021. Milan has organized a Chamber of Commerce to improve, develop, and promote our business community. Ladycats are the varsity softball tournament champs. Tammy Childers retires from NEMR Telecom after 13 years of employment with them. Ann and Ron Miller celebrated their 70th birthdays on September 25th . Sullivan County Memorial Hospital add new CT Scanner. Bill and Carletta Johnson celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary. The Green City band received 1st place at the Culver-Stockton College parade.
