Ladycats Eliminate Lady Bulldogs In Districts: Cady Pauley Breaks 3000 Career Points

The Class 3 District 16 basketball competition was held in Trenton on Saturday, February 19-26, 2022 with the games being played at the NCMC Ketchum Center. Milan drew a first round bye in the 7 team competition. Number 4 seed, South Harrison defeated Number 5 seed Marceline, to advance and tackle the Ladycats of Milan in the semi-finals of the top bracket. Carrollton, Number 2 seed defeated Number 7 seed Hamilton-Penny and Number 3 seed Trenton defeated Number 6 seed Brookfield in the first round of the bottom bracket.
The Milan Ladycats had added excitement and a buzz in the arena crowd, wondering if this would be the contest Cadence Pauley would crack the elusive 3000 point club. Setting 27 points shy of the milestone and Cady averaging well over 30 points an outing, the countdown had everyone on the edge of their seat.
First and foremost was a victory and the opportunity to play for another District Championship. The Ladycats were focused on advancement as game time approached. The Ladycats have had easy victories over the young Lady Bulldogs, but nothing can be taken for granted.
For 3 quarters the south Harrison squad kept pace with the Ladycats. The experience and constant pressure by Milan steadily saw their margin increase. The Ladycats took a 60-46 victory and advanced to finals.
As for Cady’s push for 3000, it occurred with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter. Janissa Martinez flipped the pumpkin to Cady and the long 3-pointer did the trick. SPLASH, Cady reached an exclusive group of scorers with 3000 total career points in their high school career. Congratulations!!! So proud of Cady’s accomplishments.
Milan won the tip, but South Harrison scored the game’s first points to lead 2-0. Cady hit a deuce to knot the score, but the Lady Bulldogs answered regaining the lead. Janissa had an assist to Gracie for 2 points, Cady connected 2 free throws and Milan had their first lead 6-4. South Harrison tied the game before Cady assisted on a deuce by Gracie and Auburn Cole converted 1 of 2 charity tosses for a 9-6 lead. The Lady Bulldogs roared back with 4 straight points and go in front 10-9. Emerson Pauley found Hallie Weaver who responded with a deuce and Milan led 11-10. A 3-pointer by South Harrison gave the Lady Bulldogs a 2 point advantage 13-11. Cady answered to tie the early see-saw battle. South Harrison scored the final 5 points in the quarter taking an 18-13 first quarter lead.
South Harrison stayed in top spot until Amy Pickering grabbed an offensive rebound put it back up for 2 points and a 20-19 Milan lead. Milan would not surrender the advantage the rest of the contest. Milan had an 8-0 run, Cady 4, Amy 2, and Emily Menchaca a deuce for a 26-19 lead. South Harrison ended the Ladycat rally with a deuce before intermission. Milan led 26-21. Cady had 15 points by halftime, needing 12 to break 3000.
The second half saw South Harrison draw within 2 points 28-26. Milan outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-10 to lengthen their margin at the quarter’s conclusion 42-31. With 3:34 remaining in the quarter, Janissa had an assist to Cady who knocked down a long 3-pointer to go over 3000 points in her high school career. The long 3-pointer, the shot that had made Cady very successful in her basketball career. Cady scored all 16 points for Milan in the third stanza.
The fourth quarter continued in the Ladycats favor and South Harrison could not cut the Ladycat deficit. Milan went on to a 60-46 win and on to the District Finals.
Cady led Milan in scoring with 47 points, 13 rebounds for another sweet double-double, 1 assist, 4 steals, and 1 blocked shot; Gracie 4 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals; Auburn 3 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals; Hallie 2 points, 1 rebound; Amy Pickering 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal; Emily Menchaca 2 points; Janissa 3 assists; Avery Pickering 2 rebounds, 2 steals; Emerson 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 blocked shot; Emma Whitlock 1 rebound, 1 steal.
