The Wildcats were again at home, hosting the Linn County Mustangs on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Milan led first, lost their lead, fought back to regain the lead, and spurred their way to a 10-6 non-conference victory over the Linn County Mustangs.
Milan used 3 pitchers to hold off the charging Mustangs. Grayson Smith was the starter, notching 5 innings, using 80 pitches, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, 3 walks, 2 Wildcats errors, striking out 4 hitters. Brady Sayre tossed the sixth inning using 12 pitches, 9 for strikes, 1 hit, 1 strikeout. Jeremy Bennett, 1 inning, using 27 pitches, walking 3, recording 1 strikeout.
Milan led first 1-0, after 1 inning. With 1 out Jeremy reached first as the third strike skipped past the Mustang catcher. Jeremy scored all the way from first on a long single to left field by Keaton Weter. Linn County tied the game 1-1 with 1 run in the second. A fielder’s choice, stolen base, and wild pitch put the runner at third. He scored as Zack Banner fielded a ground ball to right field, throwing out the batter at first base, with a strong, accurate throw and excellent stretch by first baseman Blayton Dibble.
Milan went back in front scoring 1 in the bottom of the second. With 1 out, Blayton Dibble walked, advanced to second as Zack Banner reached on a Mustang error. Both moved up on a successful double steal. Blayton scored a bunt by Ethan Bennett.
Back and forth lead changes, Linn County bunched 3 hits, plus a Wildcat miscue for 3 runs and a 4-2 lead. The Mustangs lead was short lived as Milan piled up 4 runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead for good, 6 to 4.
Jeremy led off with a hustling double, moved to third on a Keaton Weter’s single, and stole home. Keaton stole second, went to third on a ground it, then scored on a Mustang error. Grayson reached on the error, went to second, via a hit by Brady Sayre. Brady was erased on a fielder’s choice by Blayton. Blayton stole second and both scored on a hit to right by Zack Banner, 6-4 Milan.
Milan increased their margin with 2 runs in the fourth, 8 to 4. Jeremy reached on another Mustang miscue, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch. Keaton walked, stole second and both crossed the plate on a double by Grayson.
Linn County closed the gap with 2 runs in the top of the fifth, 8 to 6. An error, stolen base, 2 hits and a ground out put the Mustangs within 2 runs. Milan got 1 run back, scoring 1 in the bottom of the fifth. Jayden reached on a 2 out fielder’s choice, eventually scoring on a single by Keaton.
Milan added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Grayson reached via a Mustang error, and 3 passed balls resulted in the run. Jeremy got out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the Wildcat victory. Keaton Weter led the Wildcat offense going 3 for 3, 2 RBIs, 1 walk, scored twice and 2 stolen bases.
Grayson Smith was 1 for 4, 2 RBIs, 1 double, 2 runs scored.
Jeremy Bennett, 1 for 3, scored 3 runs, 1 walk, 2 stolen bases.
Zack Banner, 1 for 4, two RBIs, 2 stolen bases.
Brady Sayre, 1 for 4.
Jayden scored 1 run.
Blayton scored twice, walked once, stole 2 bases.
Ethan Bennett, 1 RBI, 2 walks.
Deric Doporto, 1 walk.
