The Milan varsity Ladycats softball squad traveled to Brashear on Saturday, August 27, 2022. They participated in a 3 team round robin event. Milan opened their 2022 season against the tough, hometown, Brashear Lady Tigers.
The Ladycats were visitors and were up against a veteran pitcher, Alexis Borgmeyer. the Brashear star hurler struck out 9 in the firt 3 frames. She walked Gracie Dickson with 1 out in the second inning. Amy Pickering collected the Ladycats first hit of the season with two out in the third inning. Amy executed a perfect bunt, then stole second and third, but was stranded.
Brashear scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning, as seven Lady Tigers faced the Ladycats starting pitcher, Emerson Pauley. Two walks, 2 critical errors, and 1 hit, a double, proved costly as the Ladycats fell behind early. The Milan defense rebounded holding Brashear scoreless the next two innings but trailed 0-2 after 3 full innings.
Neither squad scored in the fourth. However, Gracie reached on an infield hit and Kyla White walked. Unfortunately the Lady Tigers hurler struckout 3 more Ladycats.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, via strikeouts, Amy Pickering and Hallie Weaver followed with bunt singles. Another strikeout throttled the threat.
Brashear rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their margin to 5-0. Three hits and a base-on-balls did the damage.
Milan recorded their first run of the new season and cut into the deficient, scoring 1 run in the top of the 6th, 5 to 1. Emerson Pauley cranked a double to right center to lead off the inning. Annamarie Smith entered as a courtesy runner for pitcher, Emerson. Annamarie promptly stole third base and scored on a Brashear error. The Milan defense kept the Lady Tigers in check in the bottom of the sixth. Brashear 5, Milan 1.
The Ladycat motto for the season, “Don’t Let Up,” proved true in the top of the seventh. With 1 out, Amy and Hallie again reached base on successful bunt singles followed by a double steal. This put runners in scoring position and only 1 out. Auburn Cole on an 0-2 count came through on a line single into left, scoring Amy and Hallie stopped at third. Auburn stole second with 2 runners still in scoring position. A strikeout and ground out ended the contest, but exciting to the final out despite a sparkling pitching performance the Lady Tigers, Alexis Borgmeyer. Final score was Brashear 5 and Milan 2.
The Lady Tiger pitchers went 7 innings using 114 pitches, 90 for strikes, gave up 2 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks, striking out 19 Ladycats.
Emerson Pauley, the Ladycat hurler tossed a very strong game, throwing 101 pitches, 80 for strikes in 6 innings. Emerson allowed 5 runs, 6 hits, walked 3, struck out 4, hit 1 batter and the Ladycats committed 2 costly errors.
Milan out hit Brashear 8 to 6. Milan led by Amy Pickering 3 for 4, scoring once, stealing 3 bases. Hallie Weaver was 2 for 4 with 1 stolen base. Auburn Cole was 1 for 4, 1 rbi, 1 stolen base.
Emerson Pauley 1 for 4, a double. Gracie Dickson 1 for 3, one rbi, 1 walk. Kyla White 1 walk. Annamarie stole 1 base and scored 1 run.
