News of 2022 from The Milan Standard July to December
July – Ferris Eitel celebrates his 95th birthday. Betty Jeffries is the Grand Marshal in the Fourth of July Parade. Jerry and Phyllis Staples celebrate 65 years of marriage. Olivia Morris was selected as the Sullivan County Fair Queen. Destiny DeLeon was selected as the Junior Miss for the Sullivan County Fair. The Sullivan County Health Department celebrated its 45th Anniversary. Tina Kline has been named Employee of the Month by Sullivan County Memorial Hospital. Decker Rardon of Wheeling received a special plaque of recognition from the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia for turning in 203 pounds of tabs. He has been placed in their Hall of Fame. Rick and Rose Thurlo celebrate their 52nd Wedding Anniversary. Milan Chamber of Commerce has a ribbon cutting for L&M Floral.
August – John and Margaret Gregory celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary. City of Green Castle installs new playground equipment at the park. The 2003- 2004 Milan High School Top Cats Dance Team State Champions are inducted into the Milan C-2 Athletic Hall Of Fame. Ashley and Nick Taylor direct a $5000 Bayer Fund America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation to Milan FFA. Jenny Snyder is the Employee of the Month at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital. Milan C-2 Class of 1987 celebrated their 35th Class Reunion. Virginia Dehm celebrates her 100th birthday. Browning has their Sesquicentennial celebration. Blake Eitel Exhibited Hot Tabasco Tari at the Missouri State Fair. They placed 1st in Barrels and 2nd in Poles for 13 and over. Smithfield donated $1000 to the Green Castle Lions Club to be used for the 2022 Green Castle Community Annual Labor Day Celebration. Green City Lady Lions for 2022-2023 are Barb Camp, Norma Ayers, Sandy Catlett, Pam Carte, Betty Sue Nowels, Janie Gray, Terri Ruschmeier, Phyllis Jobe, and Lena Grotenhuis. Jim Brinkley selected as a delegate to the 139th American Angus Association Convention of Delegates to be held November 7. Milan Ladycats lose to Gallatin Lady Bulldogs. Ladycats beat Novinger for first home victory. Ladycats tumble to the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs. Marjorie DeGreef was voted in as Mayor to finish out Mayor Taylor’s term at Green City. Jarred and Missy Sayre and family of Milan were honored as Sullivan County Missouri Farm Family by University of Missouri Extension in Sullivan County and the local Farm Bureau.
September – Wilma Elsea and Virginia Athon are Grand Marshals of the Green Castle Labor Day parade. First Missouri Bank changes to Verimore Bank. 4-H Royalty of the Winigan Community Fair were Queen Avionna Lewis, Prince Jace Hilyard, and King Travis Jacobs. New Vet Clinic opens in Milan. The Owner is Dr. Jake and Jaime Letner. Miranda Sleeth named Employee of the Month at SCMH. Norma Ayers celebrates her 90th birthday. Green City named as Purple Heart City. Milan C-2 Emerald Regiment Band and Color Guard received second place in the 2-A Class at the Pancake Day Parade held in Centerville. Bill and Carletta Johnson celebrate 66th Wedding Anniversary. Missouri Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa celebrated 75 years of Sisterhood. Winners of the hot pepper eating contest that was held at the Milan Fall Festival was Jovan Ramirez, eating 5 peppers and taking 2nd place. Jack Glasscock won 1st place eating 28 peppers. Winners of the chili making contest were Angel Oder with 1st place and Brice Mosley taking 2nd place. Green City had Ribbon Cuttings for 4 new businesses in Green City. They were Silvernail Law Firm, CowLicks Salon, The Gopher’s Den Restaurant, and Blue Collar Armory. Milan C-2 Class of 1972 holds its 50th year Class Reunion. Homecoming Queen was crowned at the Cal Hubbard Field on Wednesday evening, September 28, 2022. The Queen was Senior, Mercisse Muswamba, and was escorted by Nathan Keck. Cody Weter and his crew poured new concrete ramps at the Food Pantry building across from Casey’s.
October – Dedication of the Roy Blunt Reservoir was held on October 13th , 2022. Senator Roy Blunt made possibly his last official visit to the region during the ceremony. Milan C-2 Class of 1977 held its 45th Class Reunion. Milan Chamber holds a ribbon cutting for Complete Family Chirpractic owned by Kailee Stephenson. NEMR honors Mabel Hill who is the longest living Cooperative Member from Novinger. She was given a blanket and a 70th Anniversary coffee mug from NEMR. G Todd and Brenda Williams celebrated their 63rd Wedding anniversary. Jim Weaver joins Verimore Bank as loan officer. Janet Callihan retires after 45 years of banking service in Milan. Milan Chamber recognizes American Family Insurance with a ribbon cutting. Milan Wildcats win over Maysville in double overtime, 22-20. American Family Insurance welcomes Fabby Hayes as Branch Manager of the Milan branch. Green City Class of 1969 held its 53rd Class Reunion at The Wooden Nickel at Kirksville. Linda Jepson of Green Castle found a rare prehistoric discovery on her farm outside of Green Castle. A paleontologist confirmed that what she found is a partial skull of an extinct bull elk from the Ice Age. The Milan Elks received a $2000 grant from the Elks National Foundation which they presented to Teresa Ross from the Food Bank for Central and North East Missouri for the Sullivan County Buddy Pack Program.
November – Milan received the first tracking snow of the season. Nearly 1000 deer are harvested in Sullivan County during deer season. New Christmas lights are put up on the Sullivan County Courthouse and on the Poole Amphitheater. They were purchased by the Milan Chamber of Commerce and Clint Bogard. The Green City Lions hosted their annual Veterans’ Day dinner for the local American Legion veterans and their spouses. Dorothy Miller celebrated her 90th birthday. Mayor Andy Herington gave a check for $5000 to the Sullivan County Senior Center to help kick off their Meal Sponsorship Fundraising Campaign. Kyle Wilkens, Missouri State Director of USDA Rural Development announced NCMRWC will receive a $22,354,000 loan and a $23,400,554 grant through the Water & Waste Disposal Loan & Grant Program. This is to be used to help fund the Roy Blunt Reservoir.
December – Cristian Chaparro was chosen for the 1st team Class 1 All-State Football Team as kicker as well as Jeremy Bennett who was chosen on the third team as a DB on the All-State list.
The Missouri Department of Conservation welcomes Agent Katie Potter as a Conservation Agent in Sullivan County. First Interstate Bank donated $6000 to High Hope Organization. Miranda Sleeth is named Employee of the Quarter for the Sullivan County Memorial Hospital. First Interstate Bank collected and donated 12,232 clothing items to community partners and schools. Linn County Farm Bureau members attended the 108th annual meeting held at Margaritaville at the Lake of the Ozarks. Ahmet Niasse and Garrett Mosley were named to the KMZU Dream Team for the 2022 football year. Sylvia Smith competes in Math Team competition. She is the daughter of Clint and Sarah Smith of Columbia and the granddaughter of Mike and Pam Smith of Milan. DAR holds their regular December meeting at the Roslyn Heights , Missouri DAR Headquarters in Booneville, Missouri.
Jeremy Bennett has signed an Intent for the University of Central Missouri located in Warrensburg, Missouri for Track and Field.
