The Milan Ladycats were host to the Marceline Lady Tigers for a non-conference encounter on Monday, January 23, 2023. The Lady Tigers will be a possible District opponent late in the season. This is the second meeting of the season for these two squads. Marceline previously slipped past the Ladycats, 50-44. The Ladycats have an 8-9 season record, Marceline has a 10-7.
This was a very exciting, evenly matched contest, not decided until the final stages of the game. Milan took the first lead but Marceline bounced back for a slight 3-2 advantage. Milan quickly regained the lead and kept the lead until the 6 minute mark of the fourth and final stanza.
The Lady Tigers did not relinguish their position, coming back for a 53-45 victory. Marceline fought off the Ladycats, using a tight zone defense in the waning stages of the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers also controlled the boards. successful free throw shooting sealed the victory, 8 for 10.
Emerson passed to Auburn who used her lefty spin move in the block area for a 2-0 Milan lead. Marceline countered with a deuce then connected on 1 of 2 free throws for their first 3-2. Amy assisted on another Auburn 2 pointer. Hallie’s short jumper gave Milan a 6-3 lead. The teams traded buckets the remainder of the quarter. The Ladycats led 12-9 after one quarter. Auburn had a productive initial quarter with 6 points. Hallie had 4 points, 1 steal. Emerson, 2 points, 1 assist. Hallie stood her ground and took a tough charging foul.
Milan maintained their lead in the second quarter. The Ladycat tight defense prevented the Lady Tigers from getting the pumpkin down low and forcing several Marceline miscues. The Ladycats had better success rebounding, better shot selection and they expanded their margin 27-19 after two quarters.
Six Ladycats scored in the second frame. Amy had 4 points, 2 rebounds. Gracie Dickson splashed a trey. Danika faked her defender to the left, drove the right lane, hit the deuce, was fouled, converted for a 3 point play. Auburn had 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist. Avery 2 points, 1 assist. Marian 1 of 2 free throws. Emerson had 1 rebound, 1 steal.
Marceline came out of halftime hot from the floor scoring 7 quick points, drawing within 1 point 27-26. Milan ended their dry spell as Emerson drained a long trey, assist to Hallie, back to a four point lead. The teams traded buckets and Milan carried a 38-33 advantage going into the 4th quarter. Emerson and Marian had a 3 pointer apiece. Danika had 3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist. Hallie was 2 for 2 on free throws, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and took another charge.
The fourth and final frame began with the Lady Tigers running off 8 straight to jump in the lead since a first quarter 3-2 lead. Milan responded with Auburn making 1 of 2 charity tosses, then Avery took it to the bucket to knot the score 41-41 with 4:53 on the clock. A Tiger trey put the Lady Tigers in front for good 44-41, 4:41 on clock. The Lady Tigers sank 7 of 9 free throws the rest of the game and the Ladycats could only muster 2, two point field goals from Hallie and Auburn. Tough loss after leading so much of the contest.
Auburn led Milan with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist.
Hallie had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and took 2 charging fouls.
Danika had 6 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist.
Emerson had 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals.
Amy had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist.
Marian had 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal.
Avery had 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal.
Gracie had 3 points.
Emily Menchaca had 1 rebound and 1 assist.
Marceline had balanced scoridng 3 in double figures.
