GREEN CITY, Mo. — Parks are a great place for community members to enjoy and if have driven by the Green City Park lately, you’ve probably noticed a new baby swing and a slab of concrete.
The concrete is for a new basketball court coming to the park.
There are also plans for a new shelter house and even more improvements to come to the park in the future.
“We still have hopes to do a restroom and other benches and lots of cool things,” said Jessica Salas, a Green City Park board member.
For many, Leslie Downing may be an unfamiliar name.
Downing grew up in Green City before serving in the military and fighting in the Vietnam War.
Sadly, Downing never made it home.
He was an only child and his parents’ dying wish was for his memory, somehow, some way, live on in this community.
“We had a wonderful, generous donation for our shelter house, which will be named after Leslie Downing, who was a Vietnam War hero,” Salas said. “He had a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart. His parents were long-time residents of Green City and they just wanted his memory to live on. So some friends in the community got together and thought hey let’s do this shelter in his name.”
The basketball court and shelter house are expected to be completed by the spring or summer of next year.
“We have people working all the time, just poured this [the basketball court] a week ago and so we’re moving along and hoping by spring/summer everybody can get out here and enjoy the shelter house and basketball court and the park,” Salas said.
The Green City Park Board will be having another fundraiser to help with future improvements at the park on New Year’s Eve.
That will be at the Old Brick Bistro.
More information about that event will be available soon on the board’s Facebook page.
