I wrote last week about thinking of planning a fishing trip for 2026. I hope it at least got you thinking about getting out and enjoying the many opportunities God has provided us on this planet. Many, many years ago — perhaps 30 if not a little more — a friend, my dad and I traveled to Upton, Wyoming, to go on a pronghorn antelope hunt. I’ll be honest: I was nervous about the trip. I planned for it all summer and did a lot of shooting with my Remington Model 788, chambered in .243. I did this because I…

Read MoreOutdoors With Kevin Fox: New Year’s Resolutions or Promises Made and Promises Kept
Another year has arrived, and with it, many resolutions will be made by people who know full well they will never keep them. The usual one is to lose weight. I’ve done that— maybe not as much as I should have—but 40 pounds over a couple of years was enough for me. Besides, I just looked it up: The Earth is spinning right now at a speed of 1,000 miles per hour. There’s probably no danger of my suddenly losing 10 pounds and being thrown into outer space, but why risk it? My resolutions are more like goals for the…

By David Sharp Two evenly matched girls basketball teams put on a hard fought but clean battle for supremacy during December 16, 2025 varsity girls non conference basketball at Brashear. Brashear and Milan remained within a five point differential most of the way. Marian Dabney sank a three ball with three minutes to play in the game then popped two more clutch home run balls helping Milan (4-3) to a 41-39 win. Marian Dabney poured in a game high 26 Wildcat points. Mya Pauley sank two key third quarter field goals and finished with nine Milan points. Jasmine Cisneros scored…

If you have not yet filled your deer tag, there is still plenty of time. As a matter of fact, when you think about antlerless and alternative‑methods seasons, deer hunters will be hunting into next year. But as always, check the Missouri Whitetail Deer Digest on seasons and methods. Congratulations to all of you successful hunters. A whitetail deer is truly evidence of God’s handiwork. This past opening weekend was perhaps one of my favorites ever. I never saw what most would consider a “shooter” buck. I was happy about that— hard as that is to believe. My grandson and…
Read MoreOutdoors With Kevin Fox: Canada Goose Season Reopens
I am a waterfowler hunter — so much so that I would rather be hunting ducks this week than whitetail deer. Everyone has a favorite, and judging by how many side‑by‑sides and four‑wheelers are at the convenience stores and how few boats are loaded down with decoys, I must be in the minority. Prior to last week in general, and more accurately Nov. 11, Canada goose season reopened in what would probably be known as the regular goose season. Later in the year, after duck season closes, I’ll be left to hunt only Canada geese if I am to hunt…

There were four gadwalls circling over the lake. It looked like they were going to drop into the middle of the lake at any moment. Because of that, I hit them hard with the duck call. I don’t know what I said to them—or what they thought I said—but instead of landing, three of them took off down the lake, and a single hen came right at us. I thought all along the hen would change her mind and rejoin her friends. But I learned a long time ago that you can never figure out a duck. This one came…
