Marty Herington locked the door to Poole’s Hardware business for the last business day on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
Joyce Miller wrote an article on the history of Poole Hardware that was published in the Thursday, March 28, 2024 edition of The Milan Standard.
Solomon Poole was the original owner, born in England and coming to the United States in 1852 to Detroit, Michigan but could not find any employment there as a carpenter. In 1853 he bought a ticket on a train and instructed them to take him as far as the train went, which at that time was Brookfield, Missouri. There he was told there was a new county that had opened up north called Sullivan County and was in need of a coffin maker. He took the stage coach to Milan where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1890. Through the years, the business was passed down to generations.
Marty is retiring, wanting to spend more time with family. There will be an on-line auction with Iman Auction from Salisbury, Missouri sometime soon to liquidate the inside merchandise.
The Link will be shared on Poole Hardware facebook page and the familes personal pages once decided on date.
