Destruction began on Monday, July 22, 2024 of the residence of Claudia Shouse that was located on West 4th Street in Milan.
The house had become unlivable after Claudia had passed away in December of 1996 and had gone thru different owners. The house was declared to be demolished earlier this year.
It was the beautiful residence of Major John and Elizabeth McCullough and later their son Warren McCullough.
The following is an article that was published in the November 29th, 1895 Souvenir Edition by The Milan Standard. Jno N. Shepler was the Editor and Proprietor and was reprinted on June of 1991 by Robert W. Wilson, Editor and Publisher.
Warren McCullough is a Missourian, and a son of Major John and Elizabeth McCullough, born at Boonville in 1839, and came to Sullivan County, southeast of Cora, Missouri, when a year old with his parents, and has resided here ever since, except during the time he served in the Army.
In 1865 he married Miss Josephine DeWitt, a Sullivan County lady, born in 1849. In 1864 he was elected sheriff of Sullivan County and served four years. He afterwards lived on a farm in Duncan Township until 1880, when he came to Milan. It is believed to be that is when he built the house on 4th Street in Milan.
In 1876, he was one of three to organize the Milan Bank and in 1884, the bank was re-organized and became the First National Bank. In 1880, he built the hardware building on the corner, and is a heavy land owner in the county, and also in the town.
He served as President of the First National Bank, up to January 1, 1895. He has retired from the mercantile business and now devotes his time to looking after his property interests, being one of the shrewd financiers of the county.
Mr. McCullough still has relatives in Sullivan County and was the great grandfather of Cully Cowgill of Milan and Stack Cowgill of Camdenton, Missouri.
