By Dr. Ben Yocom – Milan C-2 School District Superintendent
In case you missed it, on Tuesday, 2/2/21 – Punxsutawney Phil – during the annual Groundhog day – saw his shadow. This means that there is an additional six (6) weeks of winter. Whether or not you believe in the Groundhog Day traditions and tendencies – the wintry weather and extremely cold temperatures are definitely upon us! It would seem that – “Mother nature is still undefeated”. No matter what, be safe and take your time if/when driving during precipitation.
MC2 Nation is full of activities and events. We intended to hold a RIBBON CUTTING and OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, 2/6/21 – prior to home basketball games against Salisbury in the NEW GYM; but, “Mother Nature” had different ideas! Due to that – the events were rescheduled to be held on Friday, 2/12/21 at 5 p.m. The events will be sponsored by the Milan Athletic Booster Club (MABC) and include tours of the new facilities; plus, a ribbon cutting within the New gym! There are no games scheduled on Friday, 2/12/21. The GRC Showcase will be Saturday, 2/13 in the new facilities.
The annual MSHSAA District Basketball Tournaments will be held in alternative formats and will not take place at one (1) site (as has been done in the past). The higher seed team(s) will host the games and for the 2021 Class 3 District 16 – Milan High School received the ONE SEED for both the Girls and Boys teams, respectively! The district includes six (6) teams and teams seeded one (1) and two (2) will receive a ‘Bye’. After the first round, the remaining games will be HOME games for the teams! Stay tuned for the schedule and ticket/ attendance information! It’s going to be a beautiful venue for HS basketball!
Throughout the year and due to the most recent legislation regarding Academic calendars – our district has made arrangements to provide a virtual/remote option when holding classes on-site is not an option. Through 2/10/21 – we have had four (4) virtual days for Weather and three (3) virtual days to respond to the current pandemic. EVERYONE has exceeded my expectations within this format! The parents, the students and certainly the teachers have truly been exceptional! These virtual/ remote days are classified as “Alternative Means of Instruction” (AMI) days – and students/teachers engage in live-video sessions during these particular days. I sincerely appreciate the efforts of all involved in this endeavor!
The annual 2021 Graduation ceremony will be on SATURDAY, MAY 15th, 2021 at 7 p.m. in the Milan High School New Gymnasium. This location, date and time was selected by the senior class and then the Milan C-2 Board of Education approved the date/time in the January Board Meeting. The annual Prom is also set to be held on SATURDAY, MAY 9th, 2021 – the specifics regarding the PROM will be shared at a later date – as working through the various precautionary measures will be crucial. It is exciting to consider that we are planning to hold these traditional “Spring Events” – after the Spring of 2020.
