Nick Edwards Takes Over Girls Basketball Head Job
Second year teacher and coach Nick Edwards has been named Head Girls Basketball and softball coach at Green City. Nick Edwards takes over from Mike Schmidli who resigned after leading the Lady Gophers to the District Championship game in 2022-23.
Nick Edwards is a graduate of Knox County High School and Northwest Missouri State University. Nick Edwards was an assistant basketball coach to Matt Ayers on the Sectional Champion Gopher boys basketball team last season.
Edwards will also be the head girls softball coach at Green City for the 2023-24 school year. “I’m excited, I’ve got a good young group,” Nick Edwards told the Milan Standard. “I am expecting to compete in a lot of basketball games. Mike Schmidi is a good basketball coach.”
“He is in the softball coaching Hall of Fame with multiple state titles,” Nick Edwards said of Mike Schmidli. “Matt Ayers is a good coach and was a good player for Green City. I learned a lot from him and Coach Schmidli. I am taking over a good program.”
Green City has also hired Knox County R-I and Northwest Missouri State University graduate Sidney Miller to teach fourth grade and be an assistant basketball, along with being the head varsity track coach.
Nick Edwards takes over the Lady Gopher softball job from Ashlyn Stout. Coach Edwards will be assisted in softball by Jennifer Peavler.
Sidney Miller was part of the Lady Eagles most recent district championship girls basketball team around 2018.
“Sidney went on to play basketball at John Wood CC,” Nick Edwards said. “She had success there. She is tall and athletic. She will help with the tall post players we have. She knows track took. She will be the head varsity track coach this year.”
Donovan Edwards will be an assistant basketball and track coach at Green City this season. Donovan Edwards was a standout football player at Knox County HS. Donovan Edwards played football at Truman State University.
“We will have a lot of great conversations this year,” Nick Edwards said of his older brother coming to Green City. “He will be Matt Ayers’ assistant in boys basketball. He will probably sit with me helping with game management.”
