On the morning of Friday, February 16, 2024, Billie Jean Oertwig passed away at the age of 92 at the Winnsboro, Texas Lakeview Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. 

Jean lived numerous years in the Purdin, Missouri area. 

Jean was born in Detroit Michigan, May 2, 1931, to Glenn and Leolin (Smart) Moore. Her parents later moved the family to Milan, Missouri area. 

Jean was a schoolteacher in a one room school, restaurant owner, waitress, bank teller and health care worker. She enjoyed working and helping people, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. In fact, when she was living in an assisted living facility, she would help the workers put out silverware and napkins etc. in the dining hall. She made a comment that the people who lived there sure were lazy, they didn’t do anything.2 

Jean’s parents preceded her in death, as well by her husband Harvey Oertwig (2010), her daughter Vickie Lynn Hartwig (2017), granddaughter Christie Steele (2022), and her brother Jake Moore. 

She is survived by her sister Phyllis Riddle of Milan, Missouri; son Terrance D. Oertwig and wife Cherry, of Winnsboro, Texas; three grandchildren; Alana Eggleston, Tiffany Daniels, Quinn Oertwig; 10 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren plus numerous nieces and nephews. 

Jean loved gardening and cats until her health didn’t allow her those activities. Then she loved to visit, watch old movies and look at pictures of family, especially children.
